Reading Notes: Pygmalion

Image
This week I am going to retell the story of Pygmalion.  Basically it is about a man who makes a statue in the form of a female and falls in love with it.  Eventually he appeals to Venus, who grants his wish of having his statue come alive.  His statue becomes a real woman and they marry and have kids.  The entire reason why he makes this statue is he believes that "nature has given failings to the female heart," and is offended by this.  So he never gets married and instead literally makes his ideal woman.  One thing that doesn't make sense to me is why is this woman is different than the ones that he was trying to avoid.  So I am going to write a version where he gets his ivory woman, but she is just terrible. Exploring Reading Options

Image
There were 3 stories that really caught my eye. http://mythfolklore.blogspot.com/search/label/Unit%3A%20Arabian%20Nights I've always wanted to read Arabian Nights, but always talked myself out of it when I was in a book store because the copies that I would find were so expensive.  I read the first part of the story, and I like how it is about a woman telling stories to keep herself alive and to save the reset of the women in the kingdom from meeting a terrible fate. http://mythfolklore.blogspot.com/search/label/Unit%3A%20Robin%20Hood Robin Hood was one of my favorite Disney movies growing up.  I really like how these versions are portrayed in ballads.  It does make it a bit more difficult to read, but I assume it is just something to get used to.  It would be interesting attempting to write a story in that format. http://mythfolklore.blogspot.com/2014/06/egypt-secret-name-of-ra.html When I was in elementary school I loved Egyptian mythology.  These stories are slightly di

Talking About Time Strategies

I like this article.  Making lists and checking off things has always been a good way for me to get things done, and now I know that it keeps me motivated.   https://blog.trello.com/the-psychology-of-checklists-why-setting-small-goals-motivates-us-to-accomplish-bigger-things?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=linkedin&utm_campaign=checklists I work as a resident adviser, and during our training we went over the different kinds of situations related to time management.  There are Urgent Important, Not Urgent Important, Urgent Unimportant, Not Urgent Unimportant.   Urgent important is normally unexpected emergencies, or important things that need immediate attention.  Not urgent important are important things that can be planned out ahead of time.  Examples are homework or paying bills.  Procrastinating on not urgent important things can cause them to turn into urgent important things.  Urgent unimportant things are things that do not need to be done but we tend to give priority t

Discussing Technology for Class

Image
I like how the tools we are using for this class are things that we can use outside of our academic career as well.  Things like setting up blogs or websites are not common knowledge, and in this day and age of technology they probably should be.  I am already familiar with bookmarking and sound recording, but all of the other tools are ones that I have not used regularly before.   Cute Cat  Wikimedia Commons

Talking About Assignments

Image
What assignments are you most intrigued by? How is this like/unlike what you have done in other classes? Are there any extra credit options that grab your attention? I am really excited about getting the opportunity to write stories.  I love stories, but I am so-so at telling them.  I am hoping that retelling a story every week will help strengthen my 'story telling muscles'.  The storybook sounds fun as well.  I have a 13 year old sister who loves stories and wants to be a writer someday, so I want to write something that she will enjoy.   I am in the college of engineering, so I have never taken a class like this before.  Most of my classes are based around optimization or math,  and there is almost always a correct answer.  It will be refreshing to have a class that has the option of everyone having completely different outcomes to assignments.   I am really excited about doing the extra credit project called Wikipedia Trails.  I often do that when I am looking somethi

Exploring Growth Mindset

Image
Source: http://growthmindsetmemes.blogspot.com/2017/08/failure-teaches-you-to-deal-with.html I really like the concept of growth mindset.  I personally was always praised for understanding things easily in elementary school and middle school, and grew increasingly frustrated when I got to high school and college and had poor study habits and work ethics.  It has taken me 3 years of college to understand how to face academic challenges head on, thinking that just because I do not understand it now does not mean that I will never understand it.  This is something that we need to promote heavily in elementary schooling, and should be something that we introduce to all teachers.  Rewarding the smartest student is not working, we need to focus on rewarding the most improved, and giving students a greater chance to grow.

Introduction to a Queen

Image
Hello!  My name is Kathleen Taylor.  Just for clarification, my title says "Introduction to a Queen" because queen rhymes with Kathleen, so I tend to pair the two together. I am personally not an actual queen, and it doesn't really have anything to do with my life,  I just think that it sounds nice: "Queen Kathleen" My major is Industrial and Systems Engineering.  Despite it sounding semi long and confusing, my major is simply training me to find the safest, fastest, most cost effective way for going from point A to point B.  This can range from manufacturing car parts to organizing the lines at Disneyland.  The best class that I took last semester was Ergonomics, which is basically the study of improving human machine interface, while also including designing things to cause less wear and tear on the human body.  I would love to have a career that focuses around that; making things and systems better and easier for everyone.  Some random things about m

Kathleen's Storybook Favorites

Image
https://sites.google.com/view/storiesarelife/home The Stolen Princess was a wonderful story.  The beginning actually reminded me about the start of some versions of Sleeping Beauty, with a fairy or faeries being angry at a king and using his infant daughter for revenge.  Also, some similarities were the faeries raising the princess until she was 15/16, and the curse or tragedy happening when she was 16.  Also, it is similar to the Disney version because it involves a man finding her in the woods when she was about to turn 16.  Although Sleeping Beauty wasn’t the original basis for this story, I get the impression that it represents it very well.  I really liked the way that the author told the story, not revealing the entire plot at once, holding some of the story points until later.  https://sites.google.com/view/joannemythstorybook/all-the-beauty-in-the-world Choosing Paradise was a wonderful take on the Adam and Eve story.  It was extremely original.  The pictures went very

Ireland, My Favorite Place

Image
Ireland.  I studied abroad in Italy for a semester my sophomore year of college, and I got to travel a lot on the weekends.  My favorite trip was going to Ireland over Thanksgiving break.  My friends and I stayed in Dublin, which we explored at length the first day of our stay.  Our hostel was in the middle of the city, but it was difficult finding our way around at first. ( A panoramic view of Dublin, as seen from Sean O’Casey Bridge: Wikimedia Commons, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:View_of_Dublin,_looking_east_from_Sean_O%E2%80%99Casey_Bridge_20150807_1.jpg  ) On Thanksgiving day, we took a bus trip from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher.  Unfortunately, it was a bit foggy that day, but our bus driver was a wonderful story teller and tour guide, so he very much made up for the weather.  Below is a picture of me standing on a cliff in somewhere near the Cliffs of Moher, where there was better visibility.   (Me, standing near a cliff in Ireland:  photo by my friend
