Growth Mindset: The Five Whys

Goal: I want to live outside of Oklahoma some day Why:  because I would like to experience new things, and that can best be done in an environment that I didn't grow up in Why is that important: because learning new things is the best way to experience growth Why does that matter: because growing as a person is something that everyone should strive for Why: because it is something that we can all work toward, yet never achieve Why: because we are human, and that means that no one is perfect, but using empathy and learning from other's experiences can help us work toward that goal.  I chose this challenge because I learned about it while working toward my green belt in lean six/sigma.  This helped me better understand why I want to live outside of Oklahoma after I graduate.  I am too comfortable in Oklahoma, and I need to get outside of my comfort zone to be able to grow.  I chose this picture because this entire time I was picturing a curious little chi...

Growth Mindset: Motto

Image
I have decided to come up with a motto for dead week and finals.  When thinking about this, I remembered a key chain that I had in high school.  I had gotten as a novelty gift from a theme park.  It had the Taylor (my last name) family crest and motto on it, and the motto was "He hits what he aims at."  I always liked that.  To me, it said, "you will accomplish your goals when you work toward them."  I modified a little bit, so now it is "I will hit what I aim at."   I made a picture of it in Canva. Exploring Growth Mindset

Source: http://growthmindsetmemes.blogspot.com/2017/08/failure-teaches-you-to-deal-with.html I really like the concept of growth mindset.  I personally was always praised for understanding things easily in elementary school and middle school, and grew increasingly frustrated when I got to high school and college and had poor study habits and work ethics.  It has taken me 3 years of college to understand how to face academic challenges head on, thinking that just because I do not understand it now does not mean that I will never understand it.  This is something that we need to promote heavily in elementary schooling, and should be something that we introduce to all teachers.  Rewarding the smartest student is not working, we need to focus on rewarding the most improved, and giving students a greater chance to grow.
