Story Week 15: The Trickster Girl

Now, the king of her country heard of how good May was at tricking people into her bidding.  He decided that she was too dangerous a person to have continue living in his country.  The king called May to his court.

May arrived at his court, and walked into the King’s throne room.  The king propositioned her to prove her abilities.  There was a dragon who lived near the kingdom who had a large amount of treasure.  The king said that if May could get one of the dragon’s pets for him, then the king would let her marry his son.  Thinking that she would be killed in this endeavor, the king had no problem offering such a hefty prize.  May agreed, and started to the dragon’s cave.

It was night when she arrived to the dragon’s cave. She walked around trying to find one of the dragon’s pets.  She accidently walked into the dragon’s bedroom.  The dragon was asleep on in his bed.  She was about to calmly walk out, until she noticed that his blanket was made out of pure gold.

Realizing that she most own this blanket, she slowly started pulling the blanket off of the dragon.  She almost had it all, when the dragon woke up because he was cold.   Seeing that someone was taking his blanket, the dragon leapt out of bed, trying to grab May.

May escaped out of the door, and made her way to a nearby village.  The next morning, she disguised herself, and made her way back to the dragon’s cave.  She walked into the cave to find the dragon building a coffin.  She asked who he was building it for, and he said her.

He pulled off her disguise, and said that he knew that it was her who came in last night trying to steal from him. In a flash, the dragon killed her.

The king was very smug knowing that he had gotten rid of the girl who he thought would cause so much trouble.

Author’s notes:  This story was inspired by the fairy tale How the Dragon Got Tricked, by Andrew Lang.  In that story, there were two brothers.  One was jealous of the other, so he tied him to a tree and left him for dead.  The one tied to a tree tricked an old man into untying him.  He became amazing at tricking people after that.  A king takes notice and tells him to go to a dragons lair and steel some of his things.  Eventually the trickster traps the dragon in a box and brings it to the palace.  The king then opens the box and the dragon eats him.  The trickster then marries the kings daughter and rules the kingdom in his stead.  I changed this story so the trickster is a girl.  I also wanted to added a surprise ending where she ends up dying instead of the king, because I felt like the king dying version was too predictable.
